Worlds Beyond – ‘Rhapsody Of Life’

(Independent)

The second album from World’s Beyond entitled ‘Rhapsody Of Life’ is billed as a concept album celebrating human existence. Normally the term “Concept Album” has me running for the hills so before pressing play on this I was bracing for the pain of a difficult listen. This wasn’t the case thankfully, concept aside it was an easy album to let wash over you and get wrapped up in. From a creative point of view, I can see why it’s regarded as a concept album, but from a listener’s perspective it can be enjoyed on a lighter less involved manner as well.

It is a deep and meaningful album that is intended to be expressive and poetic. There is a lot of artistry gone into the making of this album on all fronts. Not just the thought-provoking lyrics but the layered and enticing musical landscapes that carry them along.

World’s Beyond are surprisingly soft edged for a Symphonic Metal act guiding us through ethereal tones rather than bruising guitar riffs. They are very reminiscent of early Within Temptation and you can hear hints of Nightwish and Epica in their style too. They have a really strong Celtic / Folk vibe going on which really reminds me of UK Prog Rock band Mostly Autumn. There is plenty of orchestration and use of classical instruments which emphasises those Celtic flavours but also gives the band a Classical touch too.

Vocalist Valerie De Kempe provides stunning vocals which really remind me of Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation and at times I get Kate Bush feels from her. Her Voice is amazing she really drew me into the songs and she delivers some indelible vocal melodies which really bolster the impact of these songs.

‘Rhapsody Of Life’ is a philosophical album with a layered vista of evocative music. This one is for deep thinkers who enjoy the artistry of music and lyrics and enjoy been taken on a musical journey. Symphonic Metal is not always accessible to casual listeners many bands leaning hard into Progressive territory or been too heavy and utilising abrasive growl vocals that scare away casuals. That’s not World’s Beyond they are quite soft for this genre and I found their style quite commercial and whilst I wouldn’t say it’s for everyone; I found it a very enjoyable listen and would certainly encourage symphonic fans to give it a spin.
