Pride Of Lions – ‘Unbridled’
(Frontiers Music)
There are some songwriters whose fingerprints are so distinctive that you know exactly what you're getting before you even press play, and Jim Peterik has always been one of those rare talents. Whether it was his work with Survivor, The Ides of March, countless collaborations, or of course Pride of Lions, Peterik has spent decades crafting songs that are built around huge melodies, soaring choruses and genuine emotion rather than fleeting trends. His ability to write music that feels uplifting, cinematic and heartfelt is virtually unmatched in the melodic rock world, and that's exactly why I've always been such a fan.
With Unbridled, Pride of Lions once again deliver the kind of grand, epic melodic rock that has become their trademark. Now, I'll say this straight away, if you're expecting this to eclipse those magical early Pride of Lions releases, you're probably setting the bar impossibly high. Those albums have become genuine classics of the genre for a reason and hold a special place in many fans' collections. But judging Unbridled purely against the band's own towering legacy almost does it a disservice, because taken on its own merits this is still an outstanding collection of songs performed by musicians operating at an incredibly high level.
One thing that immediately stands out is just how timeless Pride of Lions continue to sound. In a musical landscape where so many artists chase modern production trends or try to reinvent themselves, Jim Peterik simply keeps writing the music he believes in. That's not stubbornness; it's confidence. He understands exactly what makes melodic rock work, memorable hooks, emotional depth, strong musicianship and arrangements that feel larger than life. Those qualities run right through this album from beginning to end.
The production captures that signature Pride of Lions sound beautifully. Everything feels polished without becoming sterile, allowing every instrument room to breathe while still delivering plenty of punch. The keyboards provide the rich textures that fans have come to expect, while the guitars balance melodic finesse with enough bite to give the songs real energy. The rhythm section lays down a rock-solid foundation throughout, locking everything together with effortless precision.
Of course, the real heart of Pride of Lions has always been the songwriting, and once again that's where Unbridled truly shines. Peterik has an uncanny knack for writing melodies that seem instantly familiar without ever feeling recycled. His choruses have always had that magical ability to lodge themselves in your head after just a couple of listens, and this album continues that tradition. Rather than relying on flashy gimmicks or unnecessary complexity, the songs are built around classic songwriting principles that have stood the test of time.
Lyrically, there's plenty of heart and optimism woven throughout the album. Peterik has always had a gift for writing songs that inspire without becoming cheesy, offering messages of hope, perseverance and belief that feel genuine rather than forced. Even after all these years, there's still a sincerity to his writing that many artists never manage to capture. That emotional honesty is one of the reasons Pride of Lions have maintained such a loyal following within the melodic rock community.
The musicianship deserves enormous praise as well. Every performance serves the songs rather than individual egos, and that's something increasingly rare these days. The guitar work is tasteful and expressive, delivering soaring melodic lines instead of endless technical showboating. The keyboard arrangements add colour and atmosphere, often giving the music its cinematic scale, while the rhythm section provides both power and subtlety whenever required. Everything is played with remarkable class and professionalism.
Vocally, the album is equally impressive. Toby Hitchcock’s performances carry both power and warmth, perfectly suited to Peterik's emotionally driven material. There's a maturity to the delivery that complements the songs beautifully, allowing the melodies to take centre stage while still conveying plenty of passion. Nothing feels over-sung or forced; it's simply excellent melodic rock vocals performed by people who understand exactly what the songs require.
What I particularly appreciate about Unbridled is that it never feels like an exercise in nostalgia. Yes, it embraces all the elements that made classic AOR and melodic rock so special, but it doesn't come across as a museum piece. Instead, it feels like experienced musicians continuing to perfect a formula they've spent decades mastering. There's confidence throughout the album, but never complacency.
If there's one criticism to level at the record, it's simply that it doesn't quite reach the almost untouchable heights of those landmark early Pride of Lions albums. There aren't quite as many jaw-dropping moments that leave you completely speechless, and some longtime fans may inevitably compare every new release against those classics. But that's hardly a fair measuring stick. Very few bands, in any genre, can continually recreate career-defining masterpieces over and over again.
Taken purely as a melodic rock album, Unbridled succeeds on virtually every level. It delivers soaring melodies, rich harmonies, impeccable musicianship, polished production and the kind of heartfelt songwriting that's become synonymous with Jim Peterik's name. More importantly, it reminds us why Pride of Lions remain one of the genre's most dependable acts. They know exactly who they are, they know exactly what their audience wants, and they continue to deliver it with genuine passion and remarkable consistency.
‘Unbridled’ kicks things off in emphatic fashion. Driving guitars, uplifting keyboards and a massive chorus make for the perfect opener, setting the tone with confidence and plenty of energy.
‘Edge Of Forever’ keeps the momentum rolling. The verses build beautifully before exploding into one of those classic Peterik choruses that stays lodged in your head long after the song finishes.
‘Don't Waste A Wish On Me’ delivers an emotional message wrapped in polished AOR perfection. It's heartfelt without becoming overly sentimental, with another memorable vocal performance.
‘1000 Long Goodbyes’ slows things down slightly, offering a reflective ballad filled with elegant melodies and tasteful instrumentation. The emotion feels genuine, making it one of the album's standout moments.
‘What The Whole World Needs To Know’ injects fresh optimism with a bright arrangement and positive lyrical message. This is Pride Of Lions doing what they do best, combining hope with irresistible melody.
‘I'll Be Your Rock’ is exactly what the title promises. Built around themes of loyalty and strength, it's a reassuring anthem featuring a soaring chorus that begs to be sung live.
‘Hell Or High Water’ raises the intensity with punchier guitars and a tougher edge. It provides welcome contrast while still remaining firmly rooted in the band's melodic identity.
‘Ride The Lightning’ is one of the album's biggest surprises. Despite its familiar title, this is pure melodic rock with driving rhythms, infectious hooks and an energetic performance that keeps the album firing on all cylinders.
‘Lose Like A Winner’ offers clever lyrical twists alongside another polished arrangement. It's catchy, uplifting and showcases the band's ability to find positivity even in life's setbacks.
‘I Can See In The Dark’ combines atmospheric verses with a powerful, emotional chorus. The dynamic shifts throughout the song help keep things fresh and engaging.
‘I Can't Let Go’ delivers another slice of radio-friendly AOR with polished production, warm harmonies and a chorus that immediately feels familiar in the best possible way.
Closing track ‘A Mighty Noise’ lives up to its name, bringing the album to a triumphant finish. It's an uplifting finale that celebrates everything Pride Of Lions represent: melody, musicianship and passion.
For fans of melodic rock and AOR, this is another thoroughly satisfying chapter in the Pride of Lions story. It may not replace those cherished early classics at the very top of the catalogue, but it doesn't need to. Unbridled stands proudly on its own as a beautifully crafted, wonderfully melodic album that showcases one of rock's greatest songwriters doing what he has always done best, writing songs that lift the spirit, stir the emotions and remind us just how rewarding classic melodic rock can be.
