Piston - 'Piston'

(Independent)

I’ve been a fan of Cannock based classic rockers Piston for some time now as they are extremely hard working and ever present on my local live circuit. It’s with that in mind I find it hard to believe this is the bands debut album, it’s been a long time coming – but well worth the wait! From opening to dying riff this album is a stunning and exciting experience as they’ve managed to capture that energy and power of their live presence onto this record.

On this album the band have evolved their sound a little bit, they are less retro than I’ve heard in the past with this album sitting them amongst other new wave of classic rock bands like Black Stone Cherry and Greta Van Fleet.

This is rambunctious energetic rock ‘n’ roll and the entire album is all about bouncy punchy choruses. It captures your attention instantly and demands that you play it loud! It has low slung rhythms which pump the blues into every riff, there’s hooks all over the place with vocal whoops and inspiring guitar licks.

I’ve always enjoyed vocalist Rob Angelico’s raspy gravel vocals which contain a ton of power. There’s no studio trickery here fully expect what you hear on this record to be as strong if not stronger when you see the band live. A Phenomenal vocalist who definitely deserves wider recognition.

As good as Angelico’s vocals are its those low-slung guitar riffs from Jack Edwards that provide that infectious energy that permeates you from every single song. He delivers riffs that grab you by throat and demand you to move!

While this album is all about the rock as exemplified on ‘One More Day’ I want to mention the solitary ballad ‘Carry Us Home’ as one of the highlights!

I’ve seen these guys live and they are the real deal and always put on impressive performances. The songs on this album are born for the live arena, as you’ll hear, and this band can deliver the goods live so you just know it’s going to be a party when you go and see them which I can’t recommended enough. These guys continue the tradition of awesome British hard rock bands like Thunder and Zeppelin. Piston have created an album of British Rock at its finest! This is an essential purchase for any serious rocker who likes it loud and boisterous!
