Mountain Foot - 'Mountain Foot'

(Delta Promotion)

I wouldn’t say I’m a Classic Rock aficionado, but I do enjoy the overall genre sound – both modern (Black Stone Cherry) and from the genre’s seventies high (Led Zeppelin / Foghat). The problem is I don’t enjoy everything CR even if it’s compared to a band within the genre I love. So, albums released within this genre can be extremely hit and miss with me and I’ll either love or loathe them with very little left in the middle ground.

On paper I should love Mountain Foot, but I don’t, their self-titled debut album just leaves me cold. I can’t criticise the musicianship, it’s all top notch the vocals in particular are quite impressive. There’s a solid modern production and I can hear why this would appeal to Classic Rock fans who eat, breathe and live this style of rock. With me though it just doesn’t resonate, the songs don’t excite or intrigue me. It’s an ok listen, not unpleasant but I’ll probably never be inspired to listen to it again.

It’s very retro, I feel the band have a real love and devotion for this genre’s roots in the late sixties and early seventies. So, in their song writing that era is extremely apparent. Initially in the first few tracks I thought I heard some modern touches ala The Black Crowes, but I think that was more me digging hard for comparisons. This album is probably far better described as freshly stepping out of a time machine sent from 1971.

Its blues soaked classic rock that tends to favour a more laid-back stance. ‘My Happy Song’ is a very relaxing song, a good example of the bands laid back stoned approach, a theme throughout the album.

If you’re a diehard classic rocker it’s well worth a listen, but if you’re only a peripheral fan of the genre it may be best to move onto something else. Mountain Foot are very much embedded in the roots of the genre and that isn’t for everyone, but I can imagine fans of retro classic rock been very happy with this especially, if they have enough pre rolled joints to accompany them on their listening journey.
