There are albums that grab you by the collar and demand your attention, and then there are albums that simply find their way into your heart. Boulevard’s Be Where You Are belongs firmly in the latter category. This is AOR with feeling, atmosphere and genuine emotional weight, music that doesn’t need to shout to make itself heard. Instead, it draws you into its world, wraps itself around you and quietly refuses to let go.

This beautifully crafted mini album features five brand-new studio recordings alongside two live performances, offering a compact but remarkably satisfying collection that feels much bigger than its running time suggests. Boulevard have always understood that great AOR is about far more than polished production and catchy melodies. It is about creating a mood, capturing a moment and making the listener feel something. Be Where You Are does all three with considerable style.

From the very first moments, there is an unmistakable sense of atmosphere. The production has that wonderful AOR sheen, but thankfully it never feels clinical or overly polished. There is warmth here, space between the instruments and an almost cinematic quality to the arrangements. The music seems to breathe. Keyboards provide a gorgeous atmospheric foundation, while the guitars add colour, emotion and just enough muscle to ensure that this never drifts too far into soft-rock territory.

What really makes Be Where You Are special, though, is the emotional character running through the entire release. There is a wistful, reflective quality that feels incredibly natural. This is music about memories, relationships, hope, uncertainty and those moments in life when you find yourself looking backwards while simultaneously trying to move forwards. It is deeply emotive without ever becoming overly sentimental. That balance is incredibly difficult to achieve, but Boulevard make it sound effortless.

The melodies are beautifully constructed, possessing the kind of effortless memorability that sits at the very heart of classic AOR. There is a familiarity to the songwriting without it ever feeling dated. Instead, Boulevard take the timeless ingredients of the genre, soaring melodies, rich harmonies, tasteful guitars, sumptuous keyboards and heartfelt performances and present them with a modern clarity.

For me, that emotional connection is what elevates Be Where You Are above being simply another melodic rock release. There is a real sense of sincerity here. You can hear the feeling behind the performances, and that makes the record incredibly easy to become emotionally attached to.

It is also an album that rewards listening on headphones. Close your eyes and the layers begin to reveal themselves. Keyboards shimmer beneath the melodies, guitars sit perfectly within the arrangements and the vocals carry the emotional narrative directly to the listener. There is a wonderful sense of depth, almost as though each song exists within its own little landscape.

And perhaps that is why the title Be Where You Are feels so appropriate. This is music that encourages you to stop for a moment. Forget the noise outside. Put the phone down, turn the lights down and simply listen. In a world where everything seems to move at ridiculous speed, there is something wonderfully refreshing about an album that encourages you to actually be present.

The five new studio recordings form the heart of the release, and they demonstrate that Boulevard still have an excellent understanding of what makes AOR so enduring. The songwriting is melodic but never lightweight, atmospheric without becoming overly subdued, and emotional without losing its rock identity.

Then we get the two live recordings, which provide a welcome change of texture. They demonstrate that Boulevard’s music isn’t merely something designed to sound perfect in the studio. There is a natural warmth and energy to the live performances, reminding us that these songs can breathe in a concert environment too. The transition from studio material into the live setting works particularly well, giving the mini album a sense of completeness.

I have always believed that the best AOR albums possess an almost magical ability to transport you somewhere else. Be Where You Are does exactly that. It feels like driving home late at night with the city lights passing by the window. It feels like remembering somebody you haven't spoken to in years. It feels like standing somewhere familiar and suddenly seeing it through completely different eyes.

There is melancholy here, certainly, but there is also warmth and hope. Boulevard understand that emotional music doesn't have to be miserable. Sometimes the most powerful songs are those that acknowledge life's difficult moments while still leaving a little light shining through. And that light shines brightly across Be Where You Are.

As a mini album, this release could easily have felt like a brief stopgap, but Boulevard have made it feel like something far more substantial. Every note feels considered, every arrangement carefully shaped and every melody given room to breathe. It may only contain seven recordings, but there is more than enough here to keep returning to.

Be Where You Are is a gorgeous slice of deeply emotive AOR that wears its heart proudly on its sleeve. It is atmospheric, melodic, beautifully performed and packed with the kind of genuine feeling that cannot be manufactured in a recording studio.

Sometimes you don't need an album to knock you off your feet. Sometimes you just need it to sit beside you. Be Where You Are is one of those albums. And honestly, sometimes that's even more powerful.

‘Searching For Something’, a beautifully atmospheric way to open the release, this immediately establishes Boulevard’s ability to combine polished AOR with genuine emotional depth. There’s a reflective quality running through the music, as though the listener is stepping into a story already in progress. Melodic, warm and wonderfully expressive, it sets the emotional tone perfectly.

‘Ready For The Fall’, there’s a little more urgency here, with the guitars adding extra bite while the keyboards continue to provide that lush melodic backdrop. The songwriting has plenty of hook appeal, but it’s the emotional undercurrent that really grabs me. It feels honest and vulnerable without ever losing its AOR sophistication.

‘Starry Night’, this is where Boulevard really lean into their atmospheric side. There’s something almost cinematic about the arrangement, creating an expansive backdrop for a melody that feels both intimate and uplifting. It’s the kind of music that works beautifully late at night, when you’re alone with your thoughts and every note seems to carry a little more meaning.

‘We Live’, a wonderfully positive and life-affirming piece of melodic rock. There’s an emotional strength here that gives the song considerable impact, with the arrangement gradually building that sense of optimism. Boulevard have a real knack for creating music that feels uplifting without becoming cheesy, and this is a fine example of that balance.

‘Hold My Hand’, pure emotional AOR. There’s tenderness in the performance, but underneath that softness is a powerful sense of connection. The melody is gorgeous and the arrangement gives everything plenty of room to breathe. This is Boulevard doing what they do best, taking heartfelt songwriting and surrounding it with beautiful musical textures.

‘Talk To Me’, the first of the two live recordings brings a completely different energy. The studio polish gives way to the warmth and immediacy of a live performance, and Boulevard sound completely at home in this environment.

‘Come Together’, a fitting way to close the release, with the live setting allowing Boulevard to let their hair down a little. There’s warmth, energy and an unmistakable sense of togetherness running through the performance. It leaves the listener with a smile and, perhaps most importantly, reinforces the feeling that Be Where You Are is about connection, between people, music and memories.

Be Where You Are may only be a mini album, but Boulevard have packed an enormous amount of heart into these seven recordings. This is AOR at its most emotive and atmospheric, where melody and feeling matter just as much as the musicianship. The five new studio recordings are beautifully crafted, while the two live performances add warmth, energy and a wonderful sense of connection. What really stays with me is the atmosphere, that bittersweet, reflective quality that makes this music feel personal. It’s the kind of release that works perfectly when the lights are low and the world has gone quiet. Boulevard haven’t simply made a collection of songs; they’ve created a mood, a feeling and a place you can escape to. Beautifully melodic, deeply heartfelt and utterly timeless.
