Review By Woody
Lover Under Cover feature popular vocalist Mikael Erlandsson (Last Autumns Dream) along with his Salute band mate guitarist/producer Martin Kronlund. The main reason this is not another Salute album, although there is some similarities, is that most of the songs are written by multi instrumentalist Mikael Carlsson. The band is rounded off by Perra Johansson on Drums with of course Kronlund taking on production duties.
I’m a big fan of Erlandsson so I had high hopes for Set The Night On Fire; unfortunately overall it is a very average album. There is a handful of cracking songs here, but I don’t find myself returning to this album wanting to listen to tracks over and over. Like I say there is a couple of tracks melodic rock fans should definitely check out but it lacks a bit of spark that makes you return to albums time and again.
It is a very dark melodic hard rock album in the most part and that was obviously the vibe Carlsson was aiming for. Sometimes bombastic, sometimes pompous, sometimes metallic but missing the mark more often than hitting it. Two of my highlights are actually written by Erlandsson the urgent and memorable ‘Who Needs Love’ and the whimsical yet beautiful ballad ‘A Nice Day’.
Erlandsson as you’d expect shines out especially on the better tracks like the symphonic metal tinged ‘Angels Will Cry’, the dark bombast of ‘Hero’ and the commercial flavoured ‘Crazy For You’. These along with the two Erlandsson tracks are the ones you should check out.
I know Martin Kronlund is a popular producer and I’m one of his biggest fans when he is sat in the producer’s chair! That said I’m still yet to be convinced by his guitar work, I’ve not really been a fan of his crunchy guitar style in the past and again I’m not blown away here. The exception to that rule though is the Reece/Kronlund album.
Set The Night On Fire is dark tinged melodic hard rock with crunching guitar riffs that occasionally drifts into metallic territory.
