Review By Woody

I have to admit I expected the debut album A New Dawn from Swede’s Grand Slam to be a very run of the mill affair, so I was a little taken aback by not just how strong an album this is but by how much I love it as well! There has been zero hype surrounding this release and I find it very hard to understand why this album hasn’t been more widely and loudly acclaimed as it’s is vastly superior to many recent AOR releases, which have built up a large following of praise. I have a bad feeling this album may come out and be unnoticed by most genre fans which will be a real shame as this is a strong contender for one of the melodic rock albums of 2016!

For me this is memorable and essential Scandi AOR at its finest and the album is full of warm and uplifting AOR anthems. It’s extremely commercial with more sing along choruses than you could dream of and the ultra-melodic nature of all the songs will have genre fans biting their lips in joy. An extremely bright and vibrant album that has summer time written all over it and I’m sure I’ll be blaring it out of my stereo a lot this coming summer (even more so than I am now!).

Full of sweeping melodic landscapes, bombastic and unrelenting keyboards, vocal and guitar hooks that make A New Dawn addictive listening. Musically the full frontal and loud as hell keyboards really appeal to me and Daniel Gronberg Svensson’s stirring and evocative Keyboard’s are a real highlight for me throughout the entire album. Andy Sinner’s vocals are spot on for lovers of this style of music smooth, soaring and he delivers some delicious vocal melodies that will stick with you as find yourself singing along.

With its monolithic chorus ‘Rock My World’ is an anthemic dance floor filler with vital keyboards and soaring guitar licks. ‘Face’ is a pounding hook filled rocker which is deliciously melodic and the uplifting ‘Get High’ is a fist pumping sing along anthem.

This is an essential purchase for all melodic rockers, the sing along anthems are instant and catchy and will have many a fan dancing away till the small hours to this almost flawless melodic beauty! Potentially the feel good album of the year!
